200 - Groundhog Day (1993)

DVD Box
A man finds himself reliving the same day over and over.

Cynical weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is off to his fourth annual Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney where the groundhog predicts how much of winter remains. With him in Punxsutawney are his news producer Rita (Andie MacDowell) and cameraman Larry (Chris Elliott).

The problem is Phil doesn't want to be there and when a blizzard keeps him in the city, he finds himself in a time loop reliving the same day over and over again. After numerous inconsequential flings and verging on going insane, Phil needs to reassess his life.

Groundhog Day is a love-it or hate-it film.

My girlfriend didn't want to watch it - she hates it. Bill Murray plays a detestable character who you have to watch reliving the same moment of his life over and over and over again.

I showed it to my family - they love it. Bill Murray brings a sarcastic and cynical comedic character not seen since Ghostbusters to a film where despite being stuck in a single day, each day is, in fact, different.

Actually, as I was watching the film (which I have seen many, many times before - jokes about the time loop aside), I decided that Phil Connors was the perfect metaphor for a human being. He started off unaware of what was going to happen to him [childhood years] and when he realised he was living inconsequentially he became reckless in his hunt for a meaningless sexual encounter [teenage years]. Later he became fed up [mid-life crisis], before taking a mature, wisened approach to the situation in order to better himself [old age].

Metaphor aside, and it is Bill Murray that makes Groundhog Day a success. In fact, it was lucky that he had previously appeared in Ghostbusters (with Groundhog Day director Harold Ramis) otherwise he would probably have struggled for work for fear of being typecast as the cynical weatherman.

Instead, he became the cynical actor. In Groundhog Day his quips are as quick as they are witty. Considering the limited time frame, he manages to make the same story funny over and over again. Who else could achieve that?

Groundhog Day is a love-it or hate-it film.

My girlfriend didn't want to watch it - she hates it. I play a detestable reviewer who just repeats part of the review for a cheap joke.

  1. Hah, I thought my girlfriend was the only person in the world who hated this film! She got sick of seeing the same thing over and over again. Can't wait to show her Source Code.

    1. Funny you mention Source Code, I remember that coming out last year and my girlfriend loved it. We'd booked up a while in advance too. (review here)
