Æon Flux (2005)

Æon Flux is the story of a futuristic world where 99% of the world's population has been knocked out by an unnamed virus. Of the survivors that remain, 400 years after the event, they are now being ruled by the tyrant Goodchild brothers, a reign that has somehow lasted the full test of time.

Æon Flux (Charlize Theron) is part of a section called the monicans, a rebellious group who are out to overthrow the brothers who are accused of stealing people from the street.

While Æon is sent to assassinate the eldest brother, Trevor, she uncovers secrets about her past that lead her to resassess her own thoughts about the regime.


It is based on an American TV series - of the same name - and despite all the promise that the storyline shows, it just fails to live up to spectations.

During the first half of the film, the cardboard storyline is cut to shreds by the director Karyn Kusama's desire to keep showing Theron in ridiculously small outfits. The actions scenes become dull - despite special effects being added to the fight scenes it is never explained how the characters are seemingly able to defy the laws of physics.

After a frankly embarrassing romantic story that seems to be more about seeing more of Theron's flesh than adding anything to the film, the second half of the film improves with a tiny plot twist. Unfortunately by this point the damage has already been done.

According to the Wikipedia article, the film's marketing team declined to show any critics a preview, and, having seen the film fail to reach it's budget it is understandable why.
