Abby (Frances McDormand) and Ray (John Getz), her marriage councilor, are having an affair. After finding out, her husband, Marty (Dan Hedaya), sends his private detective (M. Emmet Walsh) out to kill the pair of them.
Instead of performing the murder, the P.I. betrays Marty and kills him instead, starting a chain of events that proves that wherever there is blood, nothing is simple.

The brothers refused to be rushed into any of their films. In some cases this can make their work infuriating as they enjoy taking their time, but in Blood Simple this works to perfection.
The success of the film is based around the ingenious chain of events that occur. The audience is often led on one step ahead of the protagonists but before that event can occur, another events is already re-shaping how the story happens.
The tension that is built throughout is outstanding. Emmet Walsh's footsteps provide some of the most nerve-wracking moments outside of a thriller, while the hallucination scene is as believable - you will struggle to find a reason to think it can't be happening - as it is terrifying.
The final showdown is a little abrupt at the very end, but finishes on a high as you once again realise that you know so much more than the characters.
Fantastic film.
